Holy Cross has a strong Visual Arts program, headed by Mr. José Lobo who teaches at all grade levels.
Students are introduced to the Process of Design in grade 9 where they are given the opportunity to expand previous knowledge of visual elements and principles within the context of their creativity. No prior visual art experience is necessary, however passion to create will be an asset. As the semester progresses members of the grade 9 visual arts are encourage to create, using a variety of mediums and techniques, art pieces that will be displayed around the school and in the Arts Genesis Awards show at the end of May. Students are also able to send in their art to be part of competitions outside the school, like the Remembrance Day, or Canada Day posters.

Following their introduction to the Design Process in grade 9, students are able to further pursue Visual Arts studies at the grade 10/11 and 12 grade levels. Students in these grade levels participate in a variety of art community events culminating with the art show devoted to the grade twelve creations during the first semester and preparation of a personal portfolio. The portfolio is individualized to each student's needs and used to apply to university or college programs. The grade 10 course allows students to develop their visual composition skills and are introduced to the theoretical basis of a variety of art movements and time periods of relevance for art. Student experiences will include creating acrylic paintings, 3D clay pieces, and figure drawing among many other ways to express uniqueness. The grade 11 course extends past the basic concepts and techniques, and allows students to expand on the artistic historical background of art movements, with emphasis in the Renaissance period. Students will also create the first of two panels to visually enrich the everyday learning environment of our school. Both, grade 11 and grade 12, panels are permanently displayed on the walls of our school.
Additional Opportunities in Visual Arts at Holy Cross
Visual Arts Club
Students who wish to be involved in Visual Arts outside the classroom can do so by participating in the Art Club, every Wednesday after school in room 133. The Art Club is open to all levels and grades at Holy Cross. We work on personal art projects, socialize, and participate in many aspects of HC student life, by helping to create a colourful presence. Of notice are the many hours devoted to create and making of the many props used over the years in Holy Cross stage performances. This opportunity happens first semester and is a great way to get involved in the Arts at Holy Cross.
