Construction Technology Students Learn "Hireable" Skills
Technological Education students in Mr. Healey's Semester 2 spring 2021 Grade 11 and 12 Construction Technology course recently completed a bathroom construction project. Students learned and applied hireable construction skills; framing, tub installation, drywalling, plastering, painting, and tiling. Through hand-on experience in the Technological Education classroom, students develop key transferable competencies and skills necessary for the workplace. Authentic learning experiences are important in the Technological Education classroom for students' to acquire knowledge and skills accomplishing tasks rather than just reading about it or seeing a task completed.
2021 Black History Month
Students in Mrs. McDonald's grade 11 Communications Technology class created posters to recognize Black History Month. The posters were created using Adobe Photoshop and were put on display in the school's main foyer. Every February, people in Canada are invited to participate in Black History Month festivities and events that honour the legacy of Black Canadians and their communities. The 2021 theme for Black History Month is: "The Future is Now". The HC student posters present mini-biographies of notable people who have shaped black Canadian history.
HC Tech Third Crossing Presentation
The Holy Cross Technological Design Grade 11 and 12 students hosted the second Community Based Project Open House on Wednesday June 15th, 2016 in the Lecture Theatre. There were four guest speakers:
-
Ms. Sophie Kiwala, MPP Kingston and the Islands
-
Ms. Lisa Osanic, Councillor Bayridge-Collins Bay
-
Mr. Frank Vanderlaan, Area Manager Highway Engineer, MTO
-
Ms. Kaurie Casista, Structural Engineer, MTO
Students were introduced to political, engineering and public issues surrounding the $100 million dollar Third Crossing Bridge Project. Ms Kiwala complemented the students on their projects and shared with them that Third Crossing project is only one of two multi-million dollar projects the City is hoping to construct in the near future. Ms. Osanic felt the range of designs and models was excellent. She also commented that politics, engineering and architecture complement each in large projects such as this one. Ms. Kaurie Casista was quite impressed by the students work and invited them to consider a future in engineering and later at the MTO. She felt the student work was extremely high for senior secondary school students. Mr. Frank Vanderlaan showed a Powerpoint presentation and video on a new construction method for bridges. Although somewhat more expensive, it reduces "down time" for the areas affected. He also remarked that he would be interested in returning in the near future.
Special thanks to Mr. Dusome’s class, and the volunteer efforts of Mr. Esford and Mr. Dusome for assisting with the photography and set-up. Finally, the event was later shown on CKWS TV channel 11 with special thanks to Jonna Semple who also spoke to students about a future in television broadcasting.
