Sector profile

​Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is about processing information (which includes capturing, transmitting and displaying information) using electronic systems. ICT is increasingly becoming an essential part of many industries. There are requirements to save time and increase efficiency, advance technology and innovation, for electronic access to finances or online shopping, creativity, marketing, and communications. ICT includes both the hardware and information technology skills, as well as the creative, communications and graphic arts expertise.​

Some future career paths

​For Information & Communication Technology majors, possible career paths include these occupation groupings: β€‹
  • Apprenticeship – computer network technician; telecommunications installation or repair worker; telecommunications line or cable worker; user support technician. 
  • College – audio and video recording technician; broadcast technician; electrical and electronics engineering technologist or technician; electronic service technician (household and business equipment); film or video camera operator; graphic designer or illustrator; information systems testing technician; railway traffic controller or marine traffic regulator; user support technician.  
  • University – computer engineer (except software engineer or designer); computer programmer or interactive media developer; information systems analyst or consultant; software engineer or designer; technical sales specialist. 
  • Entry level workplace – desktop publishing operator or related occupation; other trades helper or labourer; residential or commercial installer or servicer; retail salesperson.

Program requirements

​In the Information & Communication Technology major, students will take 9 credits in grade 11 and 12: 
  • 4 major credits that provide sector-focused knowledge and skills 
  • 1 English credit (Grade 12) 
  • 1 Math credit (Grade 11) 
  • 1 Business Studies, Science or Arts credit (Grade 11 or 12) 
  • 2 Co-operative Education credits to apply, refine, and extend your sector knowledge and skills 
Additionally, students will have opportunities for 
  • Experiential learning, career exploration and reach-ahead activities in Information & Communication Technology 
  • Certifications and training programs, including: 
    • ​3 compulsory certifications: Standard First Aid, CPR Level C with AED, and WHMIS (generic) 
    • 3 additional certifications or training programs 
    • A sector-partnered contextualized learning experience, such as training in Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship β€‹
