Sector profile
The demand for professionals in the Health and Wellness sector in Ontario and across Canada is increasing as the age of our population increases. As such, this sector has both a wide variety of career opportunities and employs close to 2 million people across Canada. Kinesiologist, child care worker, fitness instructor, doctor, nurse, veterinary technician, hospital porter and medical technician are just some of the numerous occupations that the SHSM Health and Wellness program prepares students to pursue.
Some future career paths
For Health & Wellness majors, possible career paths include these occupation groupings:

Apprenticeship – early childhood educator; educational assistant; social and community service worker.

College – correspondence, publication, or regulatory clerk; dental hygienist or dental therapist; electrical and electronics engineering technologist or technician; funeral director or embalmer; health information manager; licensed practical nurse; massage therapist; medical administrative assistant; medical laboratory technician or pathologists' assistant; medical laboratory technologist; medical sonographer; nurse aide, orderly, or patient service associate; other assisting occupation in support of health services; paramedical occupation; respiratory therapist, clinical perfusionist, and cardiopulmonary technologist; social and community service worker.

University – allied primary health practitioner; audiologist or speech-language pathologist; chiropractor; dentist; dietitian or nutritionist; family, marriage, or other related counsellor; optometrist; other professional occupation in health diagnosing and treating; other professional occupation in therapy and assessment; other technical occupations in therapy and assessment; pharmacist; registered nurses or registered psychiatric nurse; specialist physician; technical sales specialist.

Program requirements
In the Health & Wellness major, students will take 9 credits in grade 11 and 12:

4 major credits that provide sector-focused knowledge and skills

1 English credit (Grade 12)

1 Math credit (Grade 11)

1 additional Science or Social Science credit (Grade 11 or 12)

2 Co-operative Education credits to apply, refine, and extend your sector knowledge and skills
Additionally, students will have opportunities for

Experiential learning, career exploration and reach-ahead activities in Health & Wellness

Certifications and training programs, including:

4 compulsory certifications: Standard First Aid, CPR Level C with AED, WHMIS (generic), and Infection Control

3 additional certifications or training programs
- A sector-partnered contextualized learning experience, such as training in Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship
